Farmers, churches help overseas farms via Foods Resource Bank

Richard Aparco of Peru stood nervously before about 50 people at Assumption Parish in O'Fallon and discussed crop rotation and yields, organic fertilizer, greenhouses, irrigation and more.
An agronomist coordinator of a Foods Resource Bank program in Peru coordinated by Lutheran World Relief, Aparco added a bushel of thanks to supporters of the Christian response to world hunger.

Speaking with the help of translator Alex Morse of Kansas City, Kan., the first-time visitor to the United States

LIFE IN THE CHACO

Two of FRB's partners, Week of Compassion and Church World Service (CWS), support local Paraguayan partner Mingarã in the Chaco Region of Paraguay. Mingarã works with indigenous communities of the Chaco through assistance in accessing and securing ancestral land rights, promoting sustainable agriculture to provide food security and nutrition and facilitating access to safe water.

In March of this year I had the opportunity to spend time with the community of San Lazaro during a visit with Week of Compassion, CWS and Foods Resource Bank.  Just days before Holy Week the visit brought to mind the Raising of Lazarus  -  miracles of Jesus which fill us with hope and life – as the inhabitants of the San Lazaro community, after decades of struggle, finally managed to move to a piece of land which is rightfully theirs.

During a recent trip to Nicaragua, an FRB group met an amazing woman named Zaira. During the recent drought she carried two five gallon buckets up and down very, very steep hills.

FRB visit raises morale in Colombia

When Foods Resource Bank and Mennonite delegations visit the farmers who participate in FRB’s “Cacao not Coca” program in the Chocó region of Colombia, it becomes clear that the moral support implicit in their presence is quite meaningful.

The program encourages Afro-descendant and indigenous families whose desire is to turn away from illegal coca production, to return to traditional farming through training and follow-up. In May, visitors and farmers alike were shocked to find that their rice, vegetable and cacao (cocoa) crops had been erroneously wiped out by aerial spraying of glyphosate,

Prayer Request from Honduras-Nueva Frontera Program

Dear Friends,
Below is a prayer request for our partner staff with Honduras-Nueva Frontera program.  Many have met Delmis during travels with FRB. She recently notified us that violence has suddenly erupted in Nueva Frontera.

Due to food scarcity and lack of employment people are becoming desperate and crime had been steadily rising.  Organized criminal groups are now vying for control of the area and robberies are becoming quite common.

Thank you from g.r.o.w

FRB,

Thank you so much for the opportunity to be part of your ministry.

While working on a growing project I saw people get their hands dirty, I saw community grow, and I saw people motivated by something other than themselves. Jesus taught us to serve, and it was great to see people doing that.

Learning Meetings Inspire Greater Care for Neighbors in Uganda

Recently, a guest participant at a learning meeting FRB hosted in June 2013 in Uganda shared the following with FRB staff:

"Our church has a ministry for women living with HIV AIDS in which we helped decrease stigma and help them openly declare their status. This has encouraged other people in the community to go for testing and counseling, starting retroviral drugs and living in positive lifestyles for their own safety.

In Nicaragua, communities and visitors build bread ovens together

Several travelers – FRB board members and staff, university students, and growing project participants – recently traveled to Nicaragua to live and work with participants in FRB’s Nicaragua-Farmer program. The visitors, side by side with community members, built fuel-efficient bread ovens. They carried bricks and water significant distances to the worksites, plunged their hands into a mixture of local materials (different types of soil, horse manure, glue from inside the bark of the guásimo [WA see mo] tree), and helped to complete four brick ovens with the local families.
